Anna Friz

Respire, 2008-9

100 Yonge Street

Far beneath the transmission hubs atop the CN Tower and other downtown skyscrapers, Anna Friz's Respire added a scintillating intimacy to the experience of radio. Featuring a constellation of multi-channel radio receivers suspended above visitors' heads, the installation created a sonic environment in a marbled Yonge Street arcade. The sounds of breathing and other bodily exclamations, typically excised from regular radio programming, arose through the welter of signals as the receivers played and emitted their own oscillating frequencies. This milieu of harmonic interference and uneasy nighttime respirations revealed the normally invisible and inaudible contours of the surrounding radio soundscape.
